How do you know what to look for in a cure for cancer ?
The first hallmark of a cure for any disease is that it does no harm itself. The first oath of a doctor is to do no harm. So why are the same doctors harming people with cancer by using toxic chemotherapy agents ? If a compound is toxic it cannot be a real cure since it is itself poisoning the body. So the real cure for cancer should ideally be non-toxic. So why are all the drug companies trying to make more and more toxic agents to treat cancer ? Long term studies show that the overall 5 year survival of cancer patients has been increased by only 2 % through the use of chemotherapy. This figure hides the wide diversity of survival rates for particular forms of cancer. For example the 5 year survival rate of testicular cancer has been increased to 80% through the use of Cisplatin which does actually work to cure this type of cancer. Counter balanced to this success are decreased survival times when treated with chemotherapy, and many deaths annually are reported for liver failure following chemotherapy. Cisplatin therefore does offer a cure for testicular cancer but at a high cost in terms of toxicity to the liver and kidneys.
